Almagre Rioja is Vina Ijalba's least expensive wine, a Tinto with 6 months aging in American oak. It is a blend of 90% Tempranillo and 10% Mazuelo (the local name for Carignan). The vines are more than 10 years old and have been tended organically since 2000. After harvest, the grapes undergo a long 20-day maceration that gives the wine its good fruit concentration. 2003 was a good year in Rioja. This wine has benefited from a year’s bottle aging and shows very well now. A great everyday Spanish wine and a fantastic value for a wine from organic vineyards!

Tasting Notes:

Vibrant strawberry red color. Pleasant aromas of red fruit (strawberries again) with a hint of leather. A medium-bodied wine with good complexity and layers of fruit. Excellent balance with a good finish. It can age for 3 to 4 more years, but is an excellent everyday wine now. Perfectly versatile. Try it with barbecues, chicken, turkey, lamb, or red meat.

Winery:

Rioja is the most renowned red wine region in Spain. Its history blends uniquely Spanish varietals, like the great Tempranillo, with a tradition brought from Bordeaux: extended barrel aging. This combination allows the region to produce a range of wines from lively, simple reds to some of the best wines of the world, capable of being cellared for 30 years or more.
