Release Notes:
2003 was Casa Donoso’s first vintage of Malbec, and we are pleased with the result. A blend of Malbec (75%), Cabernet Sauvignon (20%), and Carmenère (5%), the grapes were hand-picked from around the winery’s Maule Valley vineyards. Harvest took place during the first two weeks of April, and 60% of the resulting wine spent 12 months in medium toast American oak barrels (the rest was aged in steel) before being blended and bottled. The resulting wine is a great Malbec with added complexity from the supporting grapes.
Tasting Notes:
A bright violet colored wine typical of Malbec. The nose is full of rich, ripe blackberry aromas with a hint of flowers and spices (licorice and anise). In the mouth, this Malbec is round with a great attack of ripe black fruit flavors, medium body and pleasant tannins. It closes with a powerful, yet fresh finish on fruit. An elegant, expressive wine that can cellar until 2009; it pairs well with lamb, game, red meat, and cheeses.
