Release Notes:
2004 was an underrated vintage in Bordeaux. Sandwiched between the hot 2003 and the sublime 2005 vintages, this vintage produced classic Bordeaux wines. When the Baron de Rothschild offered us the 2005 Clarke, an amazing wine that needs a few years of cellar aging, we decided to wait and offer the 2004 instead. Besides being approachable now, the 2004 is also a much better value. The typical Clarke blend of Merlot (70%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (30%), the 2004 aged in French oak barrels (90% new) for 16 months. Robert Parker continues to laud the Rothschild’s efforts at Clarke calling the estate a “sleeper” among many more famous (and expensive) names in Bordeaux.
Tasting Notes:
A dense dark ruby/purple colored wine that has an expressive and intense nose of blackcurrant, cherry, and plum aromas with hints of mocha, chocolate, smoke and spice. A powerful attack of fruit gives way to a deep, full-bodied mid-palate of ripe tannins before a long and fleshy finish. Drinks well now onward and will develop until 2015. Decant before serving with roasts, leg of lamb, steak, fowl, and fine cheeses.
