Puy la Rose is the neighbor of Grand-Puy-Lacoste. The estate has a mere 18 acres planted with four varieties: Merlot (45%), Cabernet Sauvignon (45%), Cabernet Franc (5%) and Petit Verdot (5%). The grapes are harvested by hand and the wine ages 18 months in barrels, of which one third are new. We last offered this wine in the superb 2000 vintage; the 2003 is equally good and is a notch above the intervening years which we did not import.

Tasting Notes:

Deep garnet colored wine with plum, tobacco, red berry, kirsch and sandalwood aromas. A medium-bodied wine with a velvety texture and fine black cherry, plum and raspberry flavors complemented by hints of cedar, tobacco and leather. This elegant and well-made Pauillac closes with a long, dense finish with medium tannins. It would benefit from further aging until 2013, but this 2003 is approachable now when served with the finest meat dishes – especially rack of lamb. Our Rating: 93+
