Release Notes:
Uruguay is the next great producer of wines in South America. This republic also has a winemaking tradition that dates back to the mid 19th Century. Its signature grape is Tannat, brought to South America by Basque immigrants. This tough grape ripened slowly in the Southwest France producing tannic wines that require years of aging. In the Uruguay’s milder climate, it comes into its own producing softer, more elegant wines with a blackberry fruit core.
Monte de Luz’s regular Tannat and Cabernet Sauvignon have impressed us with their quality. However, this is their first Reserva wine: a 50:50 blend of Tannat and Cabernet with 9 months of oak aging. The winemaker, Patrick Soye, has years of experience working with Tannat and Cabernet in France’s Madiran region. The low-yielding vines produce a concentrated and elegant wine that highlights both the rich, full-bodied personality of Tannat and the complexity and aging potential of Cabernet Sauvignon. A superb value.
Tasting Notes:
A dense ruby purple colored wine with a lovely nose of cinnamon spice, flowers, vanilla, mint and ripe red berries. In the mouth, this powerful, full-bodied wine has big, juicy sour cherry, raspberry, chocolate, and white pepper flavors. The rich fruit flavors are complemented by mild tannins leading up to an intense, yet elegant, finish on fruit. Enjoy with duck, leg of lamb, stews, short ribs, roasts and strong cheeses now through 2012.
