Although white Sancerre is now more famous, Pinot Noir has been grown here for longer and produces a light, elegant red in Sancerre's limestone soils.

The limestone soils of Sancerre produce some of most sought after white wines in all of France. This hilly region lies inland, along the Loire river due south of Paris, and borders the Allier Forest. Long known in France for its red wines, Sancerre’s crisp white wines achieved international acclaim during the twentieth century. Sancerre, along with the neighboring Pouilly-Fumé appellation, is the home of finest aromatic, dry wines made from Sauvignon Blanc as well.
