A single-vineyard Cabernet Franc from 30-year-old vines. If you haven't tried Loire Valley Cabernet Francs, now is the time!
|
Release Notes:
The Loire trio of Saumur, Chinon and Bourgeuil, is the spiritual home of Cabernet Franc. Although Cabernet Sauvignon overshadows this grape in Bordeaux, in the central Loire Valley’s cool climate, the earlier ripening Cabernet Franc is the star. Its alluring red wines have cherry, violet and green pepper aromas and flavors as well as a refreshing acidity absent from so many of today’s higher alcohol red wines made from very ripe fruit. René-Hugues Gay, whose family has owned vines in this area since 1631, claims that the chalky, fossil-rich soils (dating from when the Loire Valley was a vast inland sea) are responsible for the quality of his family's wines. Clos de la Cerisaie is a single-vineyard Cabernet Franc from 30 year-old vines grown without fertilizers or chemicals. The wine sees no oak, but is aged on the lees for 3 month to enhance complexity and character.
Tasting Notes:
A medium ruby-purple colored wine with strawberry, violet, green pepper, and earth aromas. The palate has green pepper spice complemented by cherry, raspberry, and mineral flavors before a pleasant finish on medium tannins. This is a food wine. It is great with traditional Cabernet fare like roast beef, lamb chops, and pepper steak, but it also complements glazed pork or duck, grilled salmon and roasted vegetables (especially peppers and eggplant). Drink now to 2010.
