Despite being quite far north, Alsace is the driest part of France, and enjoys plentiful sunshine and beautiful autumns thanks to the Vosges Mountains, which protect the area from the maritime influence of the Atlantic Ocean.

Pinot Noir is the only red grape allowed in Alsace. Although the temptation to imitate Burgundy’s red wines can be great, Alsace’s best growers go in a different direction. Since the climate and granite/marl soils yield grapes with thinner skins, Alsace’s best reds highlight Pinot Noir’s delicious red fruit character and elegance. Martin Zahn’s Pinot Noir Terroirs is their top-of-the-line reserve red. It comes from grapes harvested with low yields and benefits from the richness and complexity added by barrel aging.

Tasting Notes:

A bright red colored wine with blackberry and raspberry aromas with a touch of vanilla. A structured wine with fresh red berry fruit flavors, wood notes and good complexity. This balanced red is refreshing with soft tannins underlining its complexity and length. Enjoy with roasts and stews, lamb and other red meats now to 2011.
