Piovene Porto Godi Vigneto Fostine Sauvignon Blanc DOC Colli Berici 2006

Flag of Italy
Italy

Sauvignon Blanc is a rarity in Italy, however, in the Colli Berici, the beautiful hill country south of Vicenza, we found an amazing Sauvignon created by Tommaso Piovene. Taking advantage of the area’s calcar soils, Piovene produces Sauvignon wines with an unusual sweetness that comes only from very ripe grapes. This particular wine has enormous class and elegance - a reflection of the wine maker.

A late harvest, at the end of October, ensures optimal fruit ripeness – a crucial feature of this wine. The juice ferments in stainless steel for 20 days, before half is aged in stainless steel vats, and half in large two-year-old barrels. Due to the age of the barrels, almost no vanillin is transferred to the wine, but the oxygenation through the barrel brings a smoothness and concentration that creates the very essence of this wine. This is not a simple quaffing wine, but a serious bottle that you will enjoy with a vast array of foods.

Tasting Notes:

A straw yellow colored wine with green hues precedes a vibrant nose of melon, fig, peach, apricot and grapefruit. This medium-bodied wine has good grip and beautifully balances softness and acidity. Extraordinarily pure, it offers mineral flavors but is, at the same time, a classic Sauvignon, with great freshness and a very long citrus finish. Drink now to 2010 with fish in sauce, veal, chicken, goat cheese or as an aperitif.
